Auchencairn is a traditional Scottish village consisting mainly of stone houses dating from the early 17th century. It is located on the heritage coastline of the Solway Estuary, an area of unspoiled hills, cliffs, islands, bays and beaches known locally as the Scottish Riviera.
Click highlighted area for Dumfries and Galloway map
Often overlooked by visitors to Scotland in favour of the Highlands and Islands, the area has been described as 'Scotland in miniature' and has a great deal to offer walkers, cyclists, wildlife enthusiasts or those who just want to relax on a beach.
Auchencairn enjoys a particularly mild climate due to its coastal position and there is a lively and welcoming community that takes pride in the appearance and history of the village. Several craft and specialist businesses operate successfully here although it is predominantly a farming community. First mentioned by name in 1305, as part of the lands of Dundrennan Abbey there is evidence that the area has been occupied for many millennia. A detailed account of the History of The Village has been included on this website. The village attained notoriety for the scale of smuggling in the days of Robert Burns, but is now more law abiding and offers a wide range of excellent accommodation and facilities for visitors together with a very warm welcome.
We'd love you to sign our guestbook and let us know what you thought of our village, website or Scotland in general!

Another great Soup & Sweet event held by Auchencairn and Rerrick Church Guild. | | Davie Gordon - sign writer & sweet muncher | Check below for more images of the day. | On Wednesday 16th July the members of Auchencairn and Rerrick Church Guild held their annual major fund raising event in the Murray Hall, Auchencairn. To call it simply a 'Soup and Sweet' seemed somehow not to do justice to the cornucopia of goodies on offer, all of which were home made and donated by the Guild members. Entry by pre-purchased tickets or cash at the door allowed the visitor to eat as much as they wished and wash it down with tea, coffee or fruit flavoured drinks. The serving tables fairly groaned under the weight of the delightful and varied soups, that were eagerly devoured and followed by a lovely selection of sweets, some of which were even suited to those watching their calorie count. In truth most people seemed to forget waistline issues for a time and just revel in the experience. A sales tables of bric-a-brac, home baking and fresh garden produce proved to be very popular, with little but a few crumbs left for disposal. Guild President Trish Dawson speaking afterwards said "This was a tremendously enjoyable and successful event, resulting from a huge amount of hard work done by members and their families, involved in the preparation, presentation and service. A decision will be made later as to which local charitable projects may benefit from donations arising from over £650 that we have raised today. A big 'thank you' must again be said to all who supported us by their attendance." |

 | Comments from July's Visitors Book:
"All the produce is of an extremely good quality. I shall be back". "FAB". "Excellent - good choice - come all the way from Lockerbie - super time - thanks". "Such a warm welcome - gorgeous produce - will come again and again". "Very good market". "Wonderful time". "Good as ever and getting better and better". "Keep on going". Lovely stalls, fab food and very welcoming - we'll be back". | Thank you for your support and kind comments. They are always considered. We like to think of this as not just a market, but also a social event. Thus we like to know how to make it enjoyable for you. | Suggestions from visitors and our response: "Excellent but more stalls next time" - We are at capacity and have a waiting list of vendors wanting to take part. Would anyone out there like to build us a bigger village hall or sponsor a weatherproof stall so that we can expand outdoors? -"seriously" "Background music would be nice" - We're a bit wary of creating problems for the whose enjoyment and ability to communicate can be impaired by background noise. We tried it in the cafe for a time but some found it intrusive even at low volume. However we may try it in the sales area next time and await further feedback. | |
