At Craigshall Cottage we are committed to working in a sustainable way and trying to minimize the impact of our activities in a number of key ways.
- We reduce, reuse and recycle where possible and encourage our visitors to do the same with the provision of multiple waste sorting bins and a compost bin.
- We use carbon neutral fuels in the form of wood for heating and solar for hot water. The cottage is insulated and double glazed and the heaters all have thermostats and timers. The wood burning stove has an oven which can be used for cooking casseroles jacket potatoes etc.
- The flooring throughout the cottage is bamboo which is a sustainable crop and easy to maintain and clean.
- Low energy lightbulbs and energy efficient appliances are used throughout. An outdoor clothes line and an indoor clothes horse are provided as alternatives to the tumble dryer.
- The toilet has a dual flush and recycled toilet paper is provided and we encourage a responsible attitude regarding what gets flushed.
- The cleaning products used are all phosphate and chlorine free – these are used by ourselves during the changeover clean and provided for visitor use during their stay.
- We garden organically without the use of chemicals and have chosen the shrubs and plants for their suitability to the local climate and temperature. Bird feeders are provided to encourage local birds and wildlife.
- We are members of the Marine Conservation Society and their quarterly magazine is left in the cottage for visitors to read.
- We are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme as an indicator of our sustainable practices.
